Make extra cash while tidying up your home

Tidy up and make money

Winter is almost over, which means Spring Cleaning is just right around the corner. If you’ve been binge-watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, or have even read her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, then you’re probably already thinking of keeping the items that only spark joy. But what about the items that bring misery, despair, and anxiety? We suggest selling them so you can make extra cash while tidying up your house.

Here are some of the items you might want to consider selling:

Some clothes may not spark joy because they no longer fit. Let’s be honest – you’ll never wear them again because they’ll be out of style by then. Plus when you’ve shed off the unwanted weight, you’d deserve a brand new outfit to show off that new hot bod. Instead of keeping your closet packed, it’s time to sell these clothes and load up your bank account instead. Think of it as potential funds for your shopping spree when you reach your goal.

Hats, caps, scarves and other accessories that you no longer use can go, too. Perhaps you’re just not into fedoras anymore or the checkered scarf is no longer your thing. Maybe you’ve decided to only use accessories that will make you look classier. Instead of holding on to these accessories that will only be used now for Halloween, maybe letting go will help you flourish into the person you want to become (with extra cash in your bank account).

If you’re like me, you probably have about a hundred books lying around at home. Who doesn’t love a good read? But there will be books that only looked good on the cover and failed to rise to the levels of Shakespeare, Milan Kundera, and Stephen King (*ahem* Twilight). Selling the books you no longer have interest in reading will help you make more space on your bookshelf for newer, better books. Someone out there will be interested in your unwanted books, so don’t be afraid to let go and turn them into cash.

Unless you’re collecting them as part of a set, maybe it’s time to let go of these old CDs and DVDs. Some will say they are collector’s items and will cost more in the future. But if that CD is only one out of a whole collection, it may not be as valuable. With many online content subscriptions available, like Netflix, Stan, and Amazon Prime, then maybe consider decluttering and selling these CDs and DVDs that you’ll no longer watch. If you want to be totally clutter-free, you might even want to consider selling the DVD player too.

If you’re not collecting toys, you might want to also consider selling these. A lot of people online are looking for old toys and figurines that would complete their collection. Because people have an affinity for nostalgia, your old toys may actually be worth more than the dust they’re collecting in the closet. So go ahead and sell these and collect extra cash instead.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to having a tidy and organised home, only keep the items that spark joy. When you’re surrounded by only the things that make you happy, then you can have a more positive environment. You can even make this more positive by selling the items you no longer use so you can have extra cash to get out of debt, treat yourself, or save.
